Principal's Message

I would like to welcome everyone to the CHPA family. My name is Fred Segura and I am the new principal at Ersilia Cruz Middle School. I can’t wait to get this year started and work with each and every student to pursue their academic dreams and accomplish their goals. I want each student to work up to grade level and pursue college when they enter high school. That is what Chávez/Huerta K-12 Preparatory Academy is about. We have a fine tradition of; Acceptance of All People,Celebrating Community,Respect for Life and the Environment, A Preference to help the Most Needy, Innovation, Non-Violence, Knowledge, Sacrifice, Service to Others, and Determination.

My background is quite extensive in education where I have been the Principal of Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School over the last 5 years, and the Assistant Principal of Fountain Middle School from 2005 to 2016. Prior to this, I was the Dean of Students and Math Teacher at Fountain Middle School.

I have a “Whatever it Takes Philosophy”. That means that my staff and I will go above and beyond to assist students in their learning and social growth. However, I will ask that all students meet me half way in this journey. I can do everything in my power to provide you with a great education, but I cannot make you read, write, or compute. Students have to have the inner self-discipline to accomplish these tasks to move and grow academically. We have high standards and a focus of what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Students will be challenged to think critically and reason abstractly. The will solve real-world problems and provide thoughts on how Pueblo, Colorado, and America will look in the future. The will develop into scholars, leaders of great character, and citizens of the world.

My goals for this year are to move 50% of students in each academic sub-category in reading (vocabulary, literature, and informational literature) and math (Numbers and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Data Analysis) to the next level of achievement. We will also emphasize the writing goals and standards across all disciplines, and work with students to better understand science throughout their middle school careers. If this can be accomplished annually over the next 3 years, we will meet the organizations’ academic goal of state achievement and growth by the year 2025, and a model of how middle school students can grow and achieve.
This is such an exciting time for us at Ersilia Cruz Middle School. Through some restructuring of resources over the 20-21 school year, we were able to break ground on a new middle school for our students in Summer 2021. The school should be ready for classes for the Fall of 2022. It is going to be a beautiful facility and you can see more about the school below.

If there are any questions, concerns, or if you would just like to stop by and chat, please don’t hesitate to come by and knock on my door. I welcome any and all feedback and would like to thank you for trusting us with your child’s education.
